How to Prep for a Wax | Amala Studio Lynnwood, WA
Before Your Wax
A short, practical checklist for first-timers and regulars. The closer you follow it, the better your wax goes.
Hair length: about a quarter inch. Roughly two weeks of growth after shaving. If it's shorter, the wax won't grip; if it's much longer, it'll hurt more than it should.
Exfoliate the night before. A gentle scrub, hand loofah, or even a washcloth works. Don't exfoliate the day of.
Skip lotions and oils day-of. Wax doesn't grip lotioned skin well. Clean and dry is best.
Skip tanning for 24 hours before and after. Tanned skin is more reactive. Same for sunburns: please reschedule if you've burned recently.
Skip caffeine the morning of if your pain tolerance is low. Caffeine increases sensitivity. Water and a light meal are better fuel for the appointment.
Take ibuprofen an hour before if you want. Optional. Helps if you're nervous or your tolerance runs low.
Wear loose clothing. Tight underwear or jeans right after a wax can irritate the freshly-cleared area.
On Your Period?
Yes, you can still come in if you're on your period.
Wear a tampon and tuck the string inside. Most clients can't tell the difference, and we definitely don't mind. One thing to know: skin is more sensitive during your period, so the wax will feel a little more intense than usual. Plan for that, not against it.
Getting into the Building
The studio is inside a larger building with a breezeway entrance. The elevator needs to be released from inside the studio to come down to you.
So:
Text us when you're a couple minutes out
We'll send the elevator down
Take it to our floor and we'll walk you in from there
We'll text you the full address and these instructions the day of your appointment, so nothing's left to memory.
What to Expect in the Room
Once you're here, here’s what to expect
Bathroom first. We'll ask — most people prefer to go before changing.
Undress and drape. A small clean towel is on the table for comfort. Take off whatever the service requires (waist down for a Brazilian, etc.).
We walk you through the wax. What's coming, where it'll feel the most intense, when we'll pause. Talk to us if anything's too much.
Aftercare card. You'll get a small note card with the post-wax instructions on the way out. See the Aftercare page for the full version.
Q&A
I just shaved. Can I still come in?
The wax probably won't grip well if you shaved within the last 5–7 days. Sugaring is a better choice for shorter hair; it picks up at about 1/8 inch.
How long should I grow my hair before a wax?
About two weeks after your last shave: long enough to pinch, roughly a quarter inch.
Will it hurt?
The first wax is the most intense. By the third or fourth appointment, most clients describe it as quick and bearable. Avoiding caffeine and taking ibuprofen helps.
Can I bring someone with me?
The room is small and private. It's set up for one client at a time. A friend or partner can wait in the building's common areas.
Can I wax if I'm pregnant?
Generally yes. Sugaring is often preferred for sensitive pregnant skin. Check with your provider if you have any concerns.
